Abstract

Argentina’s farmland boasts one of the highest productivity potentials on the planet, yet farmers are facing significant challenges to their profitability as a result of the over-simplification of many agricultural systems.

What is more, farmers in Argentina are facing a growing number of technical challenges that threaten their yields, including weeds with resistance to herbicides and severe soil compaction.

Since 2018, we have been engaged by landowners and farm managers in Argentina to design and implement the strategies to transition their farm to regenerative agriculture whilst improving profitability.

Details

Bringing diversity back, building resilience

Crop diversity and livestock integration are amongst the most important drivers for increasing life in the soil and therefore its natural fertility. Many farms in Argentina suffer from a lack of diversity due to intensive monocropping that has persisted for too long. In our work, we seek to maximise the diversity of cropping plans, switch from synthetic to organic inputs and integrate livestock into the farm system so that we can improve both soil health and farm profitability.

Given the economic and political context of Argentina, we pay special attention to developing a transition strategy that pays in the short-term, reducing risks and protecting agricultural assets.

Regenerative transition strategies in Latin America
A step by step, yet holistic transition

As farm managers, we design farming systems that restore the natural fertility of the land, capture more carbon than they emit and enhance ecosystem services. We aim to design transitions that integrate all aspects of regenerative agriculture like mixed livestock and arable systems, green manure and crop diversity, including trees and perennial crops.

We believe in Argentina!

We believe that the large-scale farming systems that dominate industrial agricultural landscapes today need to change. We see from our work at farm-level in Argentina that a smooth transition, where farm profitability is improved alongside soil health, is possible in this market. What’s more, we are inspired by the possibility that Argentina could become a role-model for large-scale farming systems in need of transition right around the world.
